Wedgwood Majolica 'Vine & Strawberry' Plate on a Brown Ground, English, ca. 1896
Wedgwood Majolica 'Vine & Strawberry' plate, English, with a large central green grape leaf, purple grapes, strawberries, and blossoms on a brown ground, impressed marks to reverse: 'WEDGWOOD' and Wedgwood date code for 1896.
From its introduction in circa 1875, production of the 'Vine & Strawberry' endured throughout the remainder of Wedgwood's M-Series years (circa 1868-1880) and the K-Series years (1880 through circa 1888), but as Victoria Bergesen observes, "...Wedgwood Majolica continued until 1910... The story did not end there, however, for as late as 1947 a Wedgwood Catalogue offered 'Colored Vine & Strawberry' plates."
Victoria Bergesen, Majolica: British, Continental and American Wares, 1851-1915. London: Barrie & Jenkins Publishers, 1989, p. 52.
Wedgwood Majolica Pattern Books from the Wedgwood Archive reprinted in Bergesen, pp. 182-201.
Dimensions: 8.75” (D) x 0.75” (H)
