Large Minton Majolica Fish Oyster Plate, Turquoise Wells, English, Dated 1882
A Minton Majolica Oyster Plate, molded with a central scalloped well within five shell-form oyster wells, all glazed in turquoise blue and separated by spiraling fish naturalistically glazed on a bed of seaweed, with impressed marks to reverse, 'MINTONS,' date cypher for 1882, British Registry Diamond for 29 April 1880, and the design number '2365,' which corresponds to the entry, 'Oyster Plate, Fish (M)' in the Minton Ornamental Shapes (i.e., design books) preserved in the Minton Archive and reprinted in J. Jones, pp. 343-377.
