A Canton Famille Rose Chinese Export Porcelain 9-inch Plate, the polychrome enameled surface with a colorful pheasant and butterflies, among fruit and floral sprays on a celadon blank, the reverse with blue painted Xianfeng (Hsien-Feng) seal, ca. 1860.

Regarding the use of celadon by enamelers, Nadler discusses an interesting theory.

"Probably the use of celadon was contemporaneous with the Taiping revolt. According to this hypothesis, celadon was used as a substitute for white blanks which were no longer available, for the Taipings had demolished Jingdezhen's kilns."
