Émail Ombrant is a technique that consists of flooding majolica glazes over designs stamped in the body of the ware. The cavities of the stamped design appear as shadows of various depths, with the parts of the design in high relief being highlighted. Majolica pieces, particularly those by Wedgwood, employing this technique are sometimes referred to as Tremblay Wares, after the Baron du Tremblay, one of the patent holders.
