An Important George Jones Majolica Compote/Centerpiece, Dog, Fox & Rabbit Base
A Highly Rare and Important George Jones Majolica
Compote/Centerpiece, with a central naturalistically molded and glazed tree trunk with three branches supporting a turquoise-ground "bamboo and ribbon" pattern top-dish, the underside deeply-shaped and glazed in tortoiseshell mottling as dappled leaves, the bottom molded with alternating heads, a dog, a fox, and a rabbit on a rustic mound tied with lavender glazed ribbon, the trefoil platform base glazed in ochre, the reverse with indistinctly impressed GJ monogram, English, ca. 1867.
There are only two known examples of this rare design. The first known example appeared in October 2023, heavily and poorly restored.
