Pair Iconic Wassily Chairs B3, Marcel Breuer for Knoll, Black Leather, Signed
Pair of Iconic Wassily Chairs (Model B3) designed by Marcel Breuer (Hungarian-American 1902-1981).
Tubular chromed steel and black Italian leather, with 'Knoll Made in Italy' labels, and impressed cursive signature 'Marcel Breuer,' ca. 1974. Model B3 was originally designed and executed in 1925-1926 at the Bauhaus, where Breuer was head of the cabinet-making department. Wassily Kandinsky, who was on the faculty, admired the completed design, prompting Breuer to present him with a duplicate. The two men became friends. The chair became known as "Wassily" decades later when it was re-released by Italian manufacturer Gavina, whose clever renaming was far more evocative and commercial.
